Top 4 Can't-Miss Things to Cross Off Your List This Summer
By Aarti Iyer, ApplyWise
Summer is the perfect time to begin working on your college search and application process. Here are a few things you can prepare in advance to ensure a head start before returning to school.
1. Academic Plan
Whether you're beginning your senior year or just venturing into high school, it's helpful to plan what courses you'll be taking in the year ahead, as your academic profile is one of the most important parts of your application. By putting some thought into the classes you take, you can be sure you're constantly challenging yourself and pursuing subjects you enjoy.
2. Testing Schedule
Give yourself the most time possible to prepare for your standardized tests by scheduling test dates now. Be sure to schedule at least two dates for your standardized test of choice, just in case.
3. College Research
The college search can be an intensive and time-consuming affair, so it's best to start slowly, but early. Begin compiling a list of schools that interest you, based on location, majors offered, extracurricular activities, athletics, etc. It's okay if your list is long-the important thing is to have an idea of what schools you're considering once school starts.
4. Brag Sheet (or Activity Resume)
The brag sheet lists and explains your extracurricular activities, awards, community service work, employment, and hobbies. It also happens to be another very important piece of your application. Colleges are looking for someone with passion, someone who gets involved and makes a difference. Use some of your summer free time to create a first draft of your brag sheet, or activity resume, including a description of your involvement and time commitment.
It may seem like a lot of work for one summer, especially on your own.
